"Deliverance" does a good job of making the South look savage. Try an historical drama called "Band of Angels."
It's about a Southern belle (Yvonne DeCarlo) who suddenly finds out her grandma was a slave, making Yvonne a slave! She goes from being the belle of the ball to sweeping up afterwards! And her new master has an eye for her....
