He gets paid by the word count regardless if his words are smart or stupid. Stupid is easier.

If you read the article, it explains why he says that. The Red Sox have gone from being a very lovable team in 2004, as underdogs, working to break an 86-year old curse. They were America's sweet hearts, affectionally nicknaming themselves "idiots". In an effort to continue to keep up with the Yankees and consistently put a solid product on the field, they have increased their payroll and continue to get into bidding wars with each other over the top free agents. They no longer are lovable and they are despised by many more than there were loved in 2004.

Hey Enforcer, does that mean Johnny Damon should just go back to the Red Sox then? Since he isn't really a Yankee despite wearing the uniform? Just wondering.

ssshaddi - Again, read the article! Wetzel is not saying the Red Sox are as defined as a dynasty as the Yankees are. He even brought up that point himself saying the Red Sox are a long ways away from having proven continued success such as the Yankees and winning 26 World Championships. He is just saying that over the last few years, certain things the Red Sox do resemble things the Yankees have done and again, that is done in an effort to continue to keep competitive with the Yankees.

The Red Sox and Yankees approach in acquiring players and paying for talent has been about the same for the past few years now, Wetzel must be a moron for just being able to figure it out

Haha i'm glad you posted this question. I just sent him a comment letting him know that all of his articles completely contradict each other. Earlier last week when the red sox were down 3-1 against cleveland in the ALCS he wrote an article saying that the red sox do not care about winning which is why they were down in the series. Now this morning he writes an article saying that the Red Sox only care about winning and they are the new "evil empire" because they came back against the Indians. He is a complete idiot and I don't know how he makes it as a sports writer.

The Red Sox could be building a dynasty as the Yankees have and the Red Sox seem to be spending like the Yankees on payroll.

My husband says the same thing. While I don't completely agree, paying 103 MILLION for a Japanese pitcher (I'm not knockin him, just sayain) is kind of Yankee-ish. I love the Sox more than life itself (sad, I know:) but do understand where Wetzel's coming from

The Red Sox are still playing baseball unlike the Yankees.

Ergo, the Red Sox do not wish to be the Yankees.

Lets see. Yankees - 26 World Championships
Red Sox - 4 World Championships (perhaps 5)

Not exactly the Yankees. Not exactly a dynasty. There is still a pretty sizable gap in there history wouldn't you say?

The Red Sox will never be the Yankees even if they wore the same uniform.
