It means she didn't fall back or fall behind. If it's academically, like in school, it means that she was learning at the same pace as all her other classmates.

Stays on target, and is not left behind in academics, fashion, personality, or physical prowess.... all depends upon what the topic of discussion is. But it means she's even with the rest of the students.

According to me "keep up" means to improve. Thats wat it clearly says. Havent u heard people saying "keep it up"etc. That all mean the sam. In ur case it means she stood first in the class with the other students or she has the ablility to improv more and stand first. thats it
