Dennis Lehane. He is top-shelf! Before getting famous for "Mystic River" he wrote a handful of detective novels that are among the best I've ever read. One of them was adapted for the silver screen & just released as a movie ("Gone, Baby, Gone").
Another personal favorite is Michael Connelly. He wrote for 3 years as a crime reporter at the Los Angeles times before turning his pen to fiction, and his indepth knowledge shows.
Walter Mosley has written several good crime novels set in post-WWII Los Angeles and featuring an African American protagonist.
Of course, there is the "grandaddy" of all detective fiction, Raymond Chandler.
Many of the others in the genre (John Sanford, James Patterson,
Patricia Cornwell, Sue Grafton, etc.) tend to run together & their plots and even writing styles become indistinguishable from each other, although I'm sure others will disagree. I recently read "Vanish" by Tess Gerritsen & it was OK, but really nothing set it apart from the others in the genre.
Enjoy!

For twisted serial killer crime authors I would try Keith Ablow and his Frank Clevenger series, excellent books. Also Theresa Monsour and her Paris Murphy series. John Lutz has a book called the Night Spider which is also part of series, and it is so good.
For FBI crime, I suggest Catherine Coulter, she is an excellent story teller. Mariah Stewart also puts out a series of FBI stories that are really good.
Erica Spindler, Carlene Thompson, Wendy Corsi Staub and Karen Harper put out some very good, easy reads in the suspense/who done it type thrillers. Really good books that just read so smoothly.
For crime that takes an amusing twist, Janet Evanovich and her Stephanie Plum series is totally great. I love those books. Two other authors who have a similar style are Linda Lael Miller and the Look series, they even mention Stephanie Plum in these stories and the idea is kind of the same also there is Sarah Strohmeyer with her Bubbles series. Not as great as the first two, but not bad either.
I also enjoy Nora Roberts books, she has some that are pretty suspenseful and told so well. I think Montana Sky, Angels Fall, Blue Smoke, and Carolina Moon are among her best in the suspense department. Hope this helps you.
