It's hard to say - the way the fires out there are fanned by the winds you never know exactly which direction they are going to burn. The latest word (I just heard it on the news) is that they have evacuated 250,000 people.

I don't think their house will burn down. The firefighters are able to keep the vast majority of homes safe. The evacuations are a precaution, and also a way of keeping traffic out of the endangered areas so that the firefighters won't be hindered in their work. People usually go back to their homes before long.
If they live in a regular town setting, they are probably fine. The houses that do burn are in rural or wild areas surrounded with wild brush which is very dry right now. I guess you haven't been able to call them? If they don't answer, they are probably at work or school or other normal activities. My mom used to call her mother in Iowa every time we had an earthquake, to tell her we were fine, before she heard about it on the news.
We've been having a few brief power failures even where I am (Ventura), and I can smell the smoke, but there's no real danger in town because people keep their yards watered and there's not enough dry brush to create much danger.

Well, it's fire season. October is usually like this. The wind and dryness combined make it prone to fires. My boyfriend said there's about 13 fires going on right now (he lives down there, I'm from there but am going to school out of state). It's always a possibility but it mostly depends on where you live. the fires rarely ever hit my hometown but on the news this morning it said that 10,000 people have been evacuated so far, this is the most I've ever heard of.
