the car was fine one minute and the next it started sqeaking and would no longer accelerate. It smelt like burnt rubber and then the smoke started coming from the hood. i started the engine about 20 minutes later and it still sounded like it was working really hard and it began once again to smell like burnt rubber.

Sounds like your a/c compressor seized up and your belt is spinning.

It sounds like some belt it seized up. An easy way to check that would be to get someone to stand beside the car and watch the engine, not under the hood though (safty hazard) while someone else just taps the ignition; not enough to start it up, just enough to spin the starter once or twice. look for any belts that are not spinning like they should. If you do indeed find one, you'll have to replace that belt and have a knoledgable friend or mechanic check out the parts in that belt system for seizing or bad bearings or the such.
I wouldn't imagine the tranny having anything to do with it. Smoke under the hood wouldn't imply it nor would the squeaking frequency in respects to the engine RPM. A rubbing belt could create enough friction to sap quite a bit of an engine's power, especially if the engine is tuned for more of a HP output than a torque.

If your car won't accelerate, the transmission is most likely shot. Get out your credit card!
