I brushed up and down for years, then I was told (by a hygienist) that it is too much wear on your gums so now I brush sideways

I brush sideways. Brushing up and down can wear away your gums if you brush too hard.

Circular motions. Circular like the merry-go-round. Not up and down like the horsies. Not side to side like a coloring crayon. Circular like the merry-go-round.

It's more of a circular motion. A combination of up/down and back/forth.
