These problems are just totally throwing me for a loop! I am terrible at math and don't know why the person in charge of classes assigned me to this.

5 - 9w = 23
17 = 7 + 8y
-2.5d - 32.7 = 74.1

Thanks!

#1. 5 - 9w = 23
5-23 = 9w
-18 = 9w
9w = -18
w = -18/9
w = -2

#2. 17= 7 + 8y
17 - 7 = 8y
10 = 8y
8y = 10
y = 10/ 8
y = 1.25

#3. -2.5d - 32.7 = 74.1
-2.5d = 74.1 + 32.7
-2.5d = 106.8
d = 106.8/- 2.5
d = -42.72

5-9w=23
You need to solve for w. You should first subtract 5 from each side.
-9w=18
You will now divide by -9 to get the value of w.
w=-2

17=7+8y
You will subtract 7 from each side.
10=8y
You will now divide by 8 to get a value of y.
10/8=y
Simplify
5/4=y

-2.5d-32.7=74.1
Add 32.7 to each side.
-2.5d=106.8
Now divide by -2.5 to get the value of d.
d= -42.72

1. -9w= 23-5
-9w= 18
w= -18/9
w= -2

2. 8y= 17-7
8y= 10
y= 10/8
y= 1.25

3. -2.5d= 74.1+32.7
-2.5d= 106.8
d= -106.8/2.5
d= 42.72

Isolate the variable on one side of the equation. Add the opposite, then divide.

5 - 9w = 23 add the opposite of five to both sides
-9w = 18 divide both sides by -9 to leave the variable
w = -2

Same for the other problems. Algebra rocks.

2007-10-22 07:15:10 · answer #5 · answered by reynwater 7 · 0 0

5 - 9w = 23
First add 5 to both sides which equals to -9w=28
then divide -9 to each side equals to w=-28/9

17=7 + 8y
First subtract 7 from both sides which equals to 10=8y
then divide 8 from both sides equals to y=5/4

-2.5d - 32.7 = 74.1
First add 32.7 to both sides which equals to -2.5d= 106.8
then divide -2.5 from both sides whch equals to d=-42.72

you get it? ^^
