i have 2 red eared sliders one of which seems to be much older and the other day he seemed to be choking, he was sitting on his rock and he would swell his throat then open his mouth and knda cough which made this funny noise and his body kinda jerked when he did this, i took him out and tried to look in his mouth but couldnt really see anything and once i took him out he just stopped doing it i put him back in and he seemed alright but i still dont know what could have caused his little episode

"Yawning" with no noise is normal.

"Throat pumping" is how they often breathe.

Coughing is a bad sign- it may be an early sign of a Respiratory Infection. Make sure the cares, housing, and diet are good, using a good site like http://www.redearslider.com

Turtles do not make mating calls out of the water.

He is ...well to put it the only way I can think of...mbating. Every now and then turle can get confused and a little "randy". I am sure he is fine, mine do it all the time but have willing partner participating in the venture.

Hope this helps a bit...not to worry though.

My turtle would do the same thing a few times a day...I just figured he was drinking or yawning.
