The best place to start is in European-style karting series, then move on to something like Formula Renault, then regional F3, and finally GP2. I hope you are not very old yet. Most successful open wheel drivers started out in competitive karting as children.

dude, to be an F1 driver is not an easy thing as it looks at all, it is very ,very ,very ,very ,very.....and yes, very very hard. of corse it is the usual go karts then formula 3 and so on. but to actualy have the chance to be at least! a test driver of a formula 1 team is a dream come true. these days teams are searching for younger drivers , so if you are in your early 20's and yet don't have at least a 2-3-5 years of exceptional results in formula cars(single seaters) .you can just forget about it . every racing driver has this dream to reach F1 .and the secret in formula 1 is to know as many people in the field of racing, as you can ,if you have talent these people will help you get "promoted" until hopefully be in F1 .and yeah last but not least. to get good you have to have deeeep pockets racing is NOT cheap. and yeah, if you are in the United States try to find a way to move to europe F1 is not very popular in the US. good luck hope to see you beat Hamilton a** .

The majority of Formula 1 drivers started at a young age in Go Karting championships, then as they grow older make their way up, Formula Ford, Formula 4 etc.

You need to have started when you were about 5, racing karts, then into formula cars. You need to have a competition license from the RACMSA and lots of experience on national and international tracks in formula 3, then maybe, just maybe, you will get spotted, other wise you need about £5 million to get your own team started.
