Kroc began the McD's franchise essentially, he has nothing to do with the creation of the actual McD's restaraunt.
The brothers opened the first one as a short order restaurant, then cut down the menu out of laziness. Kroc expanded the idea years later after seeing their initial success.
The first answerer is correct. Kroc was a salesmen for a different industry when the first McD opened.

Well, if you want to be "truly" accurate... Ray Kroc was in business selling the "Multi-Mixer"!!! That's the mixer that they used to use to make your Milkshake... so he wasn't exactly in a different line of business... that's actually how he met the McDonald brothers and ended up buying the rights to franchise the business!!!
