I took the 3 hour glucose test today and my final result was 155. I know this is a bit higher than wanted. I am just wondering if the lab results could come back different. I am feeling awful about this. I am afraid that I am doing something that is harming my baby. I try hard to eat healthy and stay away from sweets and too many carbs but it doesn't seem to have helped. Any ideas on how bad my level was?

My doctor is out of the office today with a scheduled c-section. The lab tech said I would probably hear from him tomorrow. I just came on here for more information. I have been walking at least 20 minutes a day and have no family history of diabetes. This has been quite a shock to me. I don't know a lot about diabetes as I have not been exposed to anyone with it but I am trying to learn as much as I can. I eat protiens such as eggs, nuts and such everyday and have to have fiber as otherwise I end up constipated. I feel horrible as I don't want to harm my baby. I would do anything for him. This has been my only complication during my pregnancy. I will do whatever I am told to do by my doctor. Thank you for your advice and information but please remember that not everyone who comes on here is uneducated. I am a school teacher who spends much of my time learning about new things and I do take pride in my health.

I developed Gestational Diabetes with my 4th pregnancy. While there are risks associated with GD, it is generally able to be managed quite well with a diet plan developed for you by a diabetes educator and you will be more closely monitored beginning with weekly visits about 32 weeks instead of at 38 weeks. Additional ultrasounds are preformed to watch for excessive weight gain, especially in the upper body, of the baby which may make a vaginal delivery difficult. Regular testing of your blood glucose and eating a specified diet plan can be difficult and not all women are able to control their Gestational Diabetes with those alone and may need insulin. The exact numbers after the final blood draw of a glucose tolerance test are not an indicator of "how bad" you have GD. With GD you either have it or you don't. Levels vary, but generally, if your final number was greater than 140 this is an indication of GD. Of more importance is how well the glucose levels can be controlled. Not all babies born to moms with GD are large, my baby was born at 41 weeks and only weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces. Of concern to moms who have had GD is the likelihood that she will develop Type 2 diabetes at some point in her life. My "baby" is now 10 years old. I was diagnosed earlier this year with Glucose Intolerance, a pre-diabetic condition, which was diagnosed after 2 fasting blood glucose tests. Once again I am regularly testing my blood glucose and eating by a specialized meal plan, but this time it is in hopes preventing full onset of Type 2 diabetes. As a teacher, you know how important information is. If your doctor does diagnosis you with Gestational Diabetes, you can rest easier by reading the information given to you by the doctor, the nurse, and the diabetes educator. It is not as scary as it seems at first. It helps that it is a condition that you can do something to help control plus, after the baby is born, the diabetes will go away (not in 100% of the women, but in all but the rare case). You and your baby will have several blood glucose checks in the hospital to be sure, but by the time you go home, all signs of diabetes will be gone for both you and your baby.

diet is only half the battle, you need exercise to regulate blood sugar. Things have lots of carbs that you probably don't even realize, that's why you should be sure to intake the recommended amount of fiber and proteins and walk for maybe 20 minutes a day.
Shouldn't you be asking the doctor if you were just in the lab? Or is there some reason you don't want to pick up the phone and call your doctor?
With a result that high on final glucose, you run a good risk of poisoning the cells in both you and your baby from too much sugar. I'm not here to make judgments, but since you already took the test you had some idea of why you were doing it. Family history of diabetes? A good thing to have checked I just did mine. Luckily I came back normal, but after fasting all night and morning like you're supposed to, your body should be more than happy to intake the sugar you finally drink. Your result suggests that you may have a deficiency of insulin produced in your body. Insulin, if you don't know, is the protein released when sugar in the blood is detected. The protein binds with other proteins in your cell membranes and opens transport channels that allow glucose to flow inside.
Ask for a professional opinion, especially being pregnant. But at least if you didn't know before, you have some basic knowledge now.
Good luck with your baby

Since this was your 3hr test, that's probably not going to play out too well with your dr. It's not the highest, but it's definitely alot higher than my office would allow for. Usually what they do is send you to a nutritionalist who will help you get on a diabetic diet and they will teach you how to check your blood sugars at home and give you a meter. It's better to know that you have gestational diabetes so you can deal with it and have a healthy baby than to do nothing and hope it goes away(which it won't until after the baby is born). Good luck!

I understand what you are going through don't stress yourself to much the hormones in your body are working overtime and that sometimes makes your sugar go up. I am in my 7 month of pregnancy and have to take shots of insulin I felt horrible because I was doing something to my baby, but then I realized that all you can do is make sure that you eat well if you do get diabetes then just follow the doctors recommendations as longg as you know that you are doing everything they ask you then you should be o.k. my baby will be healthy as long as I do not cheat and eat unhealthy foods. good luck don't worry to much as lon a you ate healthy the doctors will help you control your sugar

You weren't too bad. Normal blood sugar readouts for gestational diabetes are anywhere from 80 to 120. After my test, My third is usually around 180, which is awful. Your doctor will probably just diagnose you with gestational diabetes. You'll have to record your blood suger levels 1 hr after you eat your special diet...a specialist will give you the details, and check for keytones every morning in your first urine of the day.

These are the numbers that came with my gluclose meter.
70---109 normal
110---125 impaired
126---up diabetes.
If you run this high all the time, you will probably have to go on some type of insulin, could be an oral pill or shots. If you are not getting enough exercise to wear off the carbs you eat, will also give you a high rating. Your diet will have to be watched really close, in order to get it under control.
Good luck, don't get to upset, you can get it under control, it takes alot of will power.

It is a little high, but your doctor will keep an eye on you. You are doing no harm yet, so don't be concerned.
Many pregnant women develop gestational diabetes. I hope that is not your case. But it you think about how much sugar is in that drink they give you, it doesn't sound too bad to me. Just quit worrying. Your doctor will treat you for any problems.
If the test was fasting blood sugar, I would be more concerned. 125 is about as high as a fasting would go before it would be abnormal.
Best wishes.
