Honestly, I would PROBABLY get the Toyota. If for no other reason than knowing that it has been rated the most reliable company for a few years running.
Make no mistake, I really like the way that the Mazda 3 looks, but I don't think you'll regret getting the Toyota in the end.

The Mazda 3 is the same car as a Mazda Protege, which is a very reliable car, almost as good as Honda's and Toyota's.
In the car and driver comparison test, The Mazda 3 won, because it was most fun to drive, most updated looks, high quality interior, great handling and gas mileage.
It was also faster than the Corolla or Civic.
I would get the Mazda 3.
You could see the comparison test or read about it on:

I have a Toyota Corolla S and that baby is the shhhhh. I bought it brand new for 20k and I have no regrets. It has a nice speed to it. I love the way it shifts...and most of all the trunk space is great. I put 2 12' memphis MC subs in it and that thing is monsterous. The back lets down nice and I've had the interior done with LED blue lights. I love this baby. And most of all the gas is great. I had a corolla before and that thing went 200k plus miles and I only had to put 1000 dollars worth of "hard" labor into it and I had it for 6 years. You be the judge.
