on one hand they are used to help prove a point, sometimes by manipulation. Usually they are to quantify an unknown occurance to help decide on best course of action.

Statistics.......... is Conventional Thinking, which the Conventional Thinking is that numbers don't lie. But the importance to you is diffrent then the importance of others, its a control mechanism used and manipulated to support a theory.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but statistics are probably misused more than used as demonstrated by these quotes:

i dont have statistics but i have facts. sports help our bodies stay and shape and help your heart the most. they usually build your muscle and make you strong and fit.
