Make choices based on principles not checklists. Instead of a list of do and do not do, figure out what is important, find your personal truth, and make your decisions using those as guidelines.
This allows for flexibility and a higher level of fulfillment than simple yes/no (right/wrong, good/evil, etc.) checklists.
My personal truth is to make decisions that will create more love, less hurt, more choices and less restrictions. I will do this by applying spiritual principles that are taught in all the major religions. My decisions will be made with the following in mind: love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, patience, and self-control.
I found these work better for me than the 10 commandments. The ten commandments are a list of things that you should not do but they do not tell you what you should do. A person could avoid breaking the 10 commandments and still not be a productive member of society.
Guidelines move you to action and allow for a wider range of options other than yes and no. Don't just obey the laws, transcend them. Find your inner power and use it:
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." -Marianne Williamson, "A Return To Love"
