quick question about old r & b song lyric...?

i heard it the other day in starbucks...lol

the only lyrics that i remember were the following:

"if you really care....tell me, if you really really care, then tell me this is not what you waaaaant.."

and the later part of the song is very dramatic, as the singer goes, "and i try....and i try....and i tryyyyyy"

I want to say that the singer is alexander o'neal but i can't be certain...and the track sounded like it could have been produced by quincy jones...please help me!!!

Well, thanks for the offer, but it was definitely produced in the 80s or early 90s...and there was only one man singing. but thanks for trying to help!
