I'm applying early decision to Cornell U, and the head of the department I want to get into is sending the admissions committy an email recommendation for me. How much weight does this sort of thing carry?

It will give your credentials some good weight that the head of the department is recommending you for thier program. You still have to have the gpa, etc..but a recommendation can go a looooonnnnng ways in helping you get it because it speaks to your personal ability and interest in that specific area of study and academic goals.

The head of the department you want to get into? I would say a lot--assuming s/he knows you somewhat "academically".

It will carry some but your admission will still depend on your grades, test scores and essays.
