Depression and lack of education are the main reasons. One of the 2 main reason is a health issue. Although I asked once a homeless what was his reason and he said very eloquent" I prefer to be free and sane than to slave myself with money".

The majority of people in the United States are only one or two paychecks away from homelessness. If a person gets behind on payments or loses their job it is easy to be kicked out of their place. If they are not savvy to the way help is received and dont know where to go they can easily become homeless.
If you have no job and money is severely limited so is your health insurance gone? yes no insurance. And if you think that all poor people can get medicaid you are wrong. Last winter I lost my job and only got a part time one back - I was making $480 a month - and DID NOT qualify for medicaid.
Water 888: What a dumb idea. I was homeless for several months at one point - I worked the entire time, and attended school also. I finally saved up enough money to get a place and have been fine since.

I lived in a refuge and was classed as homeless after I split up with my ex. Or do you just mean 'sleeping rough homeless?'
If you mean on the streets obviously pneumonia, being attacked etc would affect someone's health. The mental affects are that you would have a low self worth, probably be depressed and not very happy.

Alcoholism affects health and can cause homelessness. Mental Illness of any variety can result in homelessness as they can't keep a job.
Homeless people are exposed to harsh weather/rain which effects health. They also do not have nutritous diets that leads to all kinds of problems.

Reasons for homeless:
- Family breakdown (divorce)
- Ex offender
- Kids falling through cracks in the 'care system' (eg turn 18 and have to leave care institute)
- Ex military (this one is VERY common, they cannot cope with civy life, have problems due to what they have been through)
- Kids escapng abuse at home
- Financial problems
Also there is the 'HIDDEN HOMELESS' these are people who do not have a home but are not traditionally thought of as 'one the streets' EG - people in B&B, hostels, staying with friends.
Health issues:
- Risk of violence
- Poor diet
- Prone to drug / alchol abuse
- Depression

Principle of legality bias; taxi-payer and authorities are both supposed to lay hand on the ark to bend towards justice, but some members in the authority branch depending on their immunity of punishment, take advantage of "duty of society" i mean criminalise the weaker part of society with alcohol and prostitution, then the consequence is homelessness and negative health for society

I work in housing benefit and I have heard every reason, everyone has a different story... but the help you get back into housing depends upon your personal situation ... and some people get a much rougher deal than others...
