4 top, 4 bottom would be the easiest way to SEE all of the monitors fastest. It depends on what you are DOING with those monitors, though ... but the 4/4 is used routinely in things like 'security centers' because they're easier to 'see' quickly. Think of how you read ... left to right, top to bottom. That is how our eyes are trained to move ... even the Asians read in a similar pattern, but go down from the right and across, so it's a similar pattern.

I sorry to say that I don't know hat you are doing, most people stick with one monitor, unless they have a true reason to do more, for example a presentation you would use the liner monitor, If it is for a bigger screen then you could use a 4X2 monitor set-up but the screen might not be the best that big

Whichever you prefer.

Remember, you could also rotate your monitors. So if you have 8 1024 by 768 monitors you could do a 4 by 2 array that was 3072 by 2048 (768*4 by 1024*2)

This would ease the pain on your neck when you try to view the monitor's contents on the far right and left. also this makes easier navigating between windows and serves as a better order than a straight through line.
