Yes he was. They end up together in the book. Also, in the scene from "Hannibal", he cuts his own hand off the get away and not hers. He wouldn't do that for just anyone! He had so many chances to kill her and he didn't. Yes he admired her strength and only killed those he thought were weak, but he was in love with her in my opinion.

I think love was evident, but one-sided in the movie Hannibal . In the opera scene he talks to Allegra about Clarice, he made a nuanced confession about his love for Clarice. "Tell me Clarice? Would you every say to me - Stop. If you loved me you d stop?" Then he KISSED her and sacrificed his own hand.
I think Clarice felt respect and admiration towards him.
In the book I don t think they were in love at all. It was rather respect, admiration, and some kind of sexual attraction. Clarice was disappointed by the world and FBI. And there was a man - a serial killer - who appreciated her purity, her strenght, and treated her as a lady - and brainwashed her, of course. But I like to think, that Clarice has finally found herself, been able to leave the past behind and find her happiness. They helped each other to proccess their traumatic past and it made a special bond between them. They can be called soulmates, sexual partners, friends, more or less enemies, master and student - but not people who are in love.

Yes. If you read the book Hannibal, that love is evident. He does keep her with him, unlike the movie where she obviously escapes.
That is why he cannot kill her, he loves her too much.

Yes I do: I didn't read any of the books, but remember that in "Hannibal" (the movie), after she handcuffed him to herself, he cut off his own hand in order to escape to keep from hurting her.

No, he admired her strength.
He ate people he thought were weak,
that is why he did not eat her.

I doubt it was love. Perhaps a form in admiration, but not love.
