I don't know, definitely not top 10. Maybe top 50 but still probably not. The Hockey News ranked him 56 in 1998 so that seems fair.
Sometimes I think points can be a little overrated when judging a player (especially in that era). For examples I would point to Marcel Dionne as a very high scorer but not that high on my list of all-time greats or Dale Hawerchuk, another big point getter but IMO, not one of the all-time greats. Actually, Hawerchuk might be a good comparison.

Ouch, Marcel Dionne is one of the greatest players to ever wear skates. Had Dionne been drafted by the Habs and Guy Lafleur gone the route of Detroit, LA, etc, Dionne would likely be considered as sitting behind only Lemieux and Gretzky all-time. He was stuck out in obscurity however, and never really had much around him so his star never got to shine as brightly as Lafleur's did. Anyway, as for Stastny, he has to be one of the most under-rated players in the history of the sport. As the original asker pointed out, in the decade of the 80s that saw the scoring explode the way it never has before, he was quietly the second highest scorer of the decade. He was a scrappy player, who could skate, shoot, pass, do everything. He was a LOT like Peter Forsberg only much better at every part of Forsberg's game than Forsberg was. Peter was something else, and this is coming from a Habs fan who by law HATED the Nordiques worse than any Red Sox fan or Yankees fan would ever hate the other team by comparison. Fair's fair though and both Dionne and Stastny deserve their rightful credit. They were two of the greatest of all time that never really got enough of their due.

I agree with Paul N.
If Dionne had played in Montreal or Toronto or one of the original six his legend would be fixed.
In that hockey bed of LA he could probably walk down the streety and never be recognized, although that is not a bad thing for the player.
Stastny, great player, more all around player than the Great one.
My opinion, top 25
