She thinks it's a cottonwood. It's about 35 -40 inches around.

Is there any way of getting rid of it easily, cheeply, and with out having her husband know she is doing it. She wants it to look like the tree died or is dieing of natural causes.

How can she do this.

To you tree huggers don't criticize her either. She is a good person with a good heart.

She wants to put it in the process of dieing so her husband will have to hire some one to take it down.

The tree shades her whole yard so she can't move her clothes line except to the front yard and that's tacky.

Your friend with a good heart should probably talk with her husband and agree together on a solution. If they both own the tree, then they should come to a solution together and show mutual respect. The sneakiness adds complexity to the problem and shows a lack of love. Is the laundry line more important than their relationship? Maybe he is unaware of how important it is that the laundry gets enough sun, and she should find a way of communicating that. Love is the most important thing.

Ringing the tree would work, but would take YEARS for the tree to die as it has a lot of stored carbohydrates. Plus it would be obvious. Pouring chemicals over the ground won't work as it would kill everything! Tree roots, especially cottonwoods, extend far, far beyond the outer branch tips. I think husband would notice a bunch of dead plants.

It's time to talk with hubby: Dear, I want to save energy by drying our clothes outside but the cottonwood is shading the clothes line. What do YOU think we should do?

Putting the ball back in his court may spur him into action. Maybe he'll take it down or thin out branches. Remind him a tree overhead is more than likely a bird roost over freshly laundered clothes.

I don't know of a way to kill a tree without risking that it would fall and crush her clothesline. Why not just tell her husband....and then either relocate the clothesline to a sunny area or take out the tree.

it would be cheaper to buy a cloth dryer ,than the cost of removing the tree.

Iheard the tree will die if you rip the bark off it

You can kill it by "ringing" the trunk, and it will die, but it will clearly look like human damage.
