I'm not into electronics, but I really can't see one. I looked on Wal-Mart.com, and it seems like an Ipod is an MP3 Player sorta. I need to buy an Ipod for Christmas, but if an MP3 Player will do the same thing for less money, then that's the way I want to go.

Ultimately, most of the latest Apple iPods are more than MP3 players - they also play videos.

Another difference has to do with the amount of memory in the device - most of the MP3 players you find at wal-mart other than iPod have a lot less memory.

Another difference has to do with the types of music that one can play. An iPod can play MP3s as well as iTunes music (in AAC format).

I don't think that any of the other MP3s at wal-mart will play AAC format music (which means when you buy it from itunes you have to be certain to request it in mp3). Often these others will play MP3 and WMA or some other format files.

There may be one or two other of these devices at wal-mart that have similar memory. One of the devices my son uses is the Sony PSP - which can play mp3s, videos, and video games. It doesn't have as much memory as the iPod, but has memory "drives" that can be inserted and removed, so that, with enough of them, you could get a comperable number of songs (just have to juggle all those memory sticks...).

HOWEVER, I've played with a half dozen different MP3s, include the PSP, and I have found that the iPod interface is so much easier to use than the others that I can't recommend something else, myself. While I don't use iTunes, I've read about it and talked to people using it, and it too is "Best of Class" quality, from what I am told.

I suspect that you will find the iPod to be a more satisfying product, in the end.

The major difference is this... Ipods are more expensive. MP3 players by in large including ipods are just hard drives. Its the software that make then do the things you want. But unlike what dick200 says, you don't have to buy music from apple to make the ipod work. I would rather buy the cd then make copies/then convert the songs to mp3's or mp4 for use on the ipod. Its a better way of protecting and preserving your music. If you only own music on Mp3 format, then if—no when— something happens to either your ipod or mp3 player you S.O.L. But when you own the CD you just reburn. Learn how to make your won music for either mahine format. You will be better off.

Yeah, the iPod is just another MP3 player. It is practically the same thing, BUT... with more customers and more models, it may just be the best one available anyway. iPod has had ample opportunity to fix design flaws and hear customer feedback on their players, and they may have features that the cheaper ones do not. Some MP3 players are not even that much cheaper. So shop around and make sure you learn everything you can. A cheaper MP3 player still costs money. Don't get stuck with a piece of crap and wish you'd spent the extra $50-100 on the iPod.

If you are wanting a cheaper music player then I wouldn't go with an iPod.

There are different kinds of iPods. There is the shuffle for around $79.99, the new nano for around $149.99-$199.99, and the iPod video for $249-$349. There's the new iPod touch for $299 which is like the new iPhone where it's a touch-screen.

You buy their music through Itunes and only Itunes.

I personally have an iPod video just cause I love the look and the brand. There are cheaper versions of MP3 players out there so to answer your question, if price matters go to another MP3 player because they are all the same.

There is very little difference. I would recommend the Sansa line, it is the second highest selling behind the ipod. They have a new 16 GB player coming in time for Christmas. it has a built in radio and voice recording. and plays video all for $200. If you buy the ipod nano for the same price you get 8 GB only or if you buy the ipod touch 16 GB it costs $400.

an ipod is an mp3 player... unless of course you get the video one, then you can watch movies and stuff on it as well as listen to music. i personally think that the ipod is the best mp3 player... they last a long time, have lots of great features and are compatible with both mac and pc. they are a great investment.

An iPod is merely an overpriced, overrated MP3 player. There are lots of nice MP3 players that provide the same functionality as the iPod without the excessive cost.

I usually by my MP3 players from this place, they have lots of MP3 players and below retail. The SanDisk Sansa is a nice alternative to the iPod.
