Because they are.
"Imagine the people who believe such things and who are not ashamed to ignore, totally, all the patient findings of thinking minds through all the centuries since the Bible was written. And it is these ignorant people, the most uneducated, the most unimaginative, the most unthinking among us, who would make themselves the guides and leaders of us all; who would force their feeble and childish beliefs on us; who would invade our schools and libraries and homes. I personally resent it bitterly." - Isaac Asimov

Ugh.
What an ugly and misinformed question! It would be laughable if it weren't so obvious you really think you're right.
Talk about sounding silly.
Now, I'm not technically a Republican, but I am far more conservative than liberal and I find you even implying that I'm "limited intellectually"... ostentatious, if not utterly beligerent. It's that kind of false superiority... demonstrated by the Liberal "elite", that will guarantee a Republican victory in 2008.
By the way... 'downright' is one word, and the rest of your followup sentence is so incorrect grammatically that I'm astounded you have the audacity to act superior to anyone.

Oh you mean like we should blindly follow what an ex-vice-president has to say and declare that he knows more about climate than anyones else?
That if you point out information contray to man-made global warming by other scientists are to be ingored.
That we shouldn't allow are kids to bring questions they have about evolution to school because that is teaching creationism.
We are to believe that fetal stem cells that have shown no cures. The only source has to be frozen embroes while all other sources should be ingored.
That we have found out that the fetuses do feel pain early but that doesn't matter because as long as the mother want to kill it no questions should ever be raise.
That science is all prefect and good expect when it comes to genetical modified food with no bases of information just ban it.
That kind of thing?

I am going to tell you the truth as I see it. I have never meet a Republican who had a caring or concerning bone in their body for the working poor or the poor in general. They are out of touch with reality! People are working for Minimum Wage and have no health care and can't get health care.Because they can't afford it and the Republicans just open their mouths and spew out that the poor get the very best of health care for free through the Government. They need to make some calls before stating as fact! I have known people to be denied lifesaving medications on Medicaid. Its not all that great. They claim to be the party of family values and Christian Values. They are Liars! Jesus would never deny health care to the poor. Jesus was not for the wealthy who don't need the tax breaks but rather for the Poor! He said so many times so where do the Republicans get the nerve to call themselves the party of Christian Values???????

One big advance in science in the last 100 years is the discovery of DNA and the fact that every fertilized egg contains EVERYTHING needed to make it a distinct person from the very start.
That's a fact many Democrats, with their own apparent "intellectual limitations," seem to ignore.

I think a lot of genuine conservatives (the small government, fiscally responsible, states' rights, government butts out of your life types) are starting to realize the damage that the reactionary, single-issue, brain dead-woman "saving," Bible-thumping windbags have done to what used to be a valid political stance. This country needs the latter to form their own party so we can see the idiocy coming in advance without having to stop and think, "Is this person a REAL conservative or a paranoid, anti-science, pseudo-religious misogynistic nutbag?"

Think tanks instead of "liberal academia". Again it's not the first time I said that here but it's the answer to many things. American conservatism has effectively grown into a cult where everyone in the outside world is wrong and they are the sole bearers of truth justice and the American way. Everyone is out to get them(liberal bias), they are on a God given mission to protect America from the Godless (as in the title of a book of one of their hero's) liberals. They have all characteristics of a religious cult. Ideology over fact, reason and truth. It's sad but it is the American reality.
