Yes it is common.

LCD screens have a much narrower viewing angle than CRT monitors.

1. Stability. Viewfinder creates more stability. With the viewfinder, you have the camera to your face and in your arms, which are close to your body. In all, 4 points of stability. With live view, you have your two arms which are not close to your body nor the camera on your face, which is only 2. 2. Battery life. Using the LCD screen can cut your battery life down to a third of what it should. Instead of taking 1000 pictures without it, you take 300-400 with it 3. Speed. Whenever you digitize something, it has a certain lag factor to it. We have drastically improved, but it is still no match for the speed of light. with live view, the light goes into the camera, gets read by the sensor, sent to the processor, which is sent to the LCD screen for viewing. That takes time. with the viewfinder, however, the light enters the lens, hits a couple of mirrors, and goes straight into your eye. No lag, no whooshing images. Less of a chance you will miss a shot. the only places where I see live view a viable option would be 1. On a tripod, doing still life 2. Weird camera angle, such as overhead, or under, shooting next to your hip.

Some newer ones may do that. If there is an Auto Button on your screen, try pressing that and that usually fixes the issue.
