It's Title IX of the gender equality in sports act, but there's so much more history to it than that implies. It really has it's roots in the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but was applied to sports in 1992. Google just the phrase "Title IX" (without the quotation marks) and you'll get a lot of good hits. About number 4 is a chart showing it's history and its evolution. I couldn't figure out which one to link you with, so try my method and choose the one the helps the most. Marc is correct in noting that it does not gaurantee equal payment to individuals, but my county, for example, cannot earmark funds only for football or wrestling (boys' programs) without giving the same amount to a female or non-gender based activity, like basketball, golf or tennis, for example.

If there were such a law, it would be great for the owners of Major League teams.

Take professional basketball, men and women's; You have television networks throwing money at men's teams to televise games, and advertisers who want to promote their products on the broadcast are where this money comes from. There simply is less of it for women's sports.

Now, if the owner of a team couldn't pay more to his best player than the same position pays in women's leagues, that owner would have a wonderful problem on his hands. The problem would be a question of what to do with all that money that he's no longer allowed to pay his players.

I suspect the owners would be happy to solve that without complaint.

I you really think that there's an injustice going on in the disparity of amount paid to athletes, the only thing you can do about it is pick a women's team and become a fan.

There is none. But Title IX guarantees similar access to athletics at universities and colleges recieving federal funding.
