Yes, I know, a lot of black people name their children traditional Judeo-Christian names. But others use names like "Lastacia" or "Lamika." I've heard some white people insult those names, but I don't understand why. I think they're really pretty.
I mean, I also met a "Leukemia" and a "Placenta," and those are awful.. obviously.. but why do people have a problem with creating names instead of using the same ones people have been using for 2000 years or so?

What's wrong with the name "Lucretia"? That's actually a traditional name, coming from a Roman legend.. it's not something her mother just made up.

Thanks, Rachel M.. I just looked up the name "Lucretia" and it was also the name of a famous abolitionist. So maybe that's why she named her daughter that, I think it's lovely.

mr318 - They were definitely spelled that way. I worked at a restaurant where we checked IDs on all credit or debit purchases, so I actually saw their driver's licenses.

Living, Lecretia is just a variation of Lucrezia which is Italian. Many of the other names are simply variations of Eastern European names such as LaTonya for example.
They make fun of them for the same reason that they come down on them for everything else: we mock that which is not familiar to us. It's pretty ridiculous considering that I've heard some pretty stupid wht names as well: Apple, Dweezel, the list goes on but no one sits back and asks why wht people give their kids stupid names.
It's not my place to judge other people because, frankly, if you just think about the phonetics and the sounds involved, all names are equal. It just all boils down to what you're used to hearing. I mean, Blake, Blain, Betty? Think about it, they're only "normal" because you're used to hearing them.

What kind of moron would name their child Leukemia or Placenta?
i was in a store once & this black woman's children were named Mercedes and Lexus. How idiotic. I wonder if that's where these kids were conceived: in the back seat of a car.

because ALOT of those names sound ridiculous. i am all for individual names - don't want 10000 other bob's and betty's,but please - those poor kids. i know a girl named lucretia - and she could slap her mom for that one.(she's black)
edit: i don't care where the name came from,i was just giving it as an example that some people HATE their unique names, and she does indeed hate her name,so-tell it to her.

Luekemia? Placenta? Ok....
Anyways, people hate because their people of low character. I think its dumb and people need to start hating things worth hating rather than hating someone's damn name.

I doubt Leukemia and Placenta were spelled that way.
Maybe they sounded that way. Did you actually see them spelled out?

Because, no matter who you are, you feel like an idiot when you mispronounce an unusual name and get corrected.

I have no problem with ppl inventing "unique" names, but they should check to make sure they're not naming their child something that has a gross, disgusting, or embarrassing meaning...
