I fancy a challenge, and will be buying bit by bit as funds allow.

So I am looking for a tutorial with not too much jargon.

I have some experience, message me if you have any questions. I assume you want to build something linux-compatible? If so, go with a Nvidia motherboard, with integrated video and sound cards. That way you'll save money because you won't have to buy them separately.
The next thing you need is a processor. I recommend dual-core with at least 2.0 GHz. Then you need RAM, 512mb-1 gig is recommended. Then you need a hard drive. Then you need an operating system, I assume your using ubuntu.

There are plenty of videos on youtube that show how to put these parts together

Edit:
I forgot 2 parts: the case and power supply

Sounds like fun! I'm a 44 yr old housewife & built my own computer about 4 years ago. I had a blast doing it! The company I bought my barebones kit was from Newegg.com. They have very reasonable prices on most of their components & kits. There is also some links on their site that should be helpful with actually building it...such as forums. The link to that is http://www.newegg.com/Info/KnowledgeBase.aspx
Also one link from that page that looks helpful is Tom's Hardware Forums where there's a section that specifically talks about building your system: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/
