I think the second response you got is typical of what a lot of people think, but we see racism everywhere, honestly. It doesn't have much to do with education or who you're around, as people self-segregate in educational and diverse environments, which I feel is based on modern racism.
Every group in the US is hated, but it seems to matter more that blacks and Latinos are hated because they make the least amount of progress in the US and hold the least amount of power, i.e. they can't really enforce their racism in any meaningful way unless they are going to be violent because of it. And that *is* how a lot of people see blacks and Latinos, especially how they see blacks--violent. The hatred is a result of the same stereotypes and ideas that were created a long time ago out of fear that white males would lose power over everything, including white women. These ideas have lived on and been passed down.
Blacks and Latinos have internalized these ideas to the point where they make them self-fulfilling prophecies...which, in turn, makes people say, "See? I TOLD you 'those people' were like that" and reinforces the hatred. This is so in everything from education (standardized tests being invented to demonstrate certain groups are less intelligent/inferior, including some white ethnic groups) to interracial dating (the old idea was black men really desired white flesh and would even go so far as to rape white women, i.e. now reference Kobe Bryant and how other black male/white female rapes and relationships become a bigger deal to everybody than "normal" rape and relationships). Most racists will do two things when you talk to them about race and racism: 1) they will claim they aren't racist, and 2) they will justify their racism by giving these same old negative stereotypes about what "those people" are like.

Fear of blacks and Mexicans is not world-wide but certainly applies to the United States. Part of the reason dates back 400-500 years ago when white Europeans enjoyed huge profits from slavery, when non-whites were generally considered sub-human. For the past 150-200 years, though, there's been pervasive fear of revenge by a steadily-growing black population. As far as Native Americans are concerned, the U.S. avoided a similar situation by simply slaughtering them.

I've often wondered this myself. My best guess is that people fear anything that makes them feel threatened. Mexicans coming here and taking our jobs. Blacks are all criminals and will steal our possessions. Even though that's absolutely ridiculous, that's sorta the mindset. It's easier to make excuses and say these people are the problem as opposed to admit that society as a whole has a problem and fix it. Say it enough and you'll believe it yourself.
Personally, I don't care what race you are, but if I see you walking down the street dressed like a thug, I'm going to think you're trash. You can be white, black, mexican, whatever - the way you carry and present yourself is how you will be judged.

I agree there is always a black vs. white topic like example:The racist pig dog the bounty hunter or the Jena 6 situation,Mexicans seem like the target in immigration and people always hate them because of how they look only the white looking Mexicans are accepted, and Asians sometime like the Virginia Tech situation but not all whites are racists trust me!

Because they are racists, because they commit more crimes, because they are irresponsible for themselves and their children. They present these types of bad behavior as being a part of their culture or a new culture they are trying to create for people of their color and ethnicity.
And the people who hate blacks or mexicans because of it are stupid and ignorant. No one commits a crime as a representative of a race or ethnic group. No one acts a fool of behalf of their race. They're simply being themselves and have been mistakenly mislabeled as a "black person" or a "Mexican person" rather than just a "stupid person". By focusing on their race or skin color, we are associating their behavior with their race, which is destructive to our ethnically and culturally mixed society.

the mexican hate i think comes mostly from illegal immigration.
the hate of blacks comes from left over animosity that has been passed onto children from their grandparents etc.also - the "race card" that comes up in lots of situations, the "attitude" alot of blacks portray such as "someone owes me something because of slavery" etc.
also, both races are typically involved in more crime,or that is statistically true in my area.
i am not a "racist",but i do have opinions about things such as immigration etc that some might say are "racist". i never judge an individual,we all have bad apples.
i have answered as best i can, with the reasons i think and hear the most from people i know ...

I have to agree with Jane and to piggy back onto what she said, I think it's part of the socialization process.
We have decided to marry ourselves to this idea of race and, as such, we have to stick to it. If we don't, we have to admit that we've been wrong, we're not as great as we think we are, and we'll be forced to accept personal responsibility in the absence of a scapegoat.

I don't think either group is "hated by so many".
I do think that those people who are racist tend to be for a couple of reasons :
They tend to be uneducated.
They have little contact with members of the group they dislike. They rely on stereotypes, etc., to base their opinion.
If they actually spent some time with them they would soon realize that we are essentially all the same.
