can't they got their IP addresses when they order things on-line, and can't they go to where they ship their purchases?
Especially IP addresses. And shipping, too, if they ship to P.O. boxes, wouldn't there be people who saw them opening these boxes, and IDs shown to open them, and forms filled? It should be a child's game.

I had this problem, someone used my credit card number to purchase WarCraft items. The credit card company reversed the charges immediately, and they said that because the didn't have to pay for the charges, they didn't investigate the IP address, it seems that many companies do this to avoid any court costs or lawyers fees because of the amount of false charges from identity theives,. It seems like a double edged sword, you can fight the charge and lose alot of money in court or ignore them and lose less money. So, if the credit card company doesn't involve the police or give them the vital information, the police don't have a case to investigate.

The people committing the crimes know ways around this stuff. First off is using compromised internet connections. Go wireless and drive around a neighborhood until you find a connection. Order to your heart's delight, there is no way to trace it back to you.

Next up is to employ the reshipping scam. Find a sucker. Not too hard. Post something on Monster.com about a great work at home opportunity. Tell the person that they get paid to reprocess shipped packages. They are sent packages and they take those and reship them to a different address. Tell them that they are paid for each package they ship like this. Let them do it for 2 weeks and then drop them like a rock (you know, before they expect a paycheck). This makes it much harder to track down the merchandise. People fall for this scam everyday. Many times, they are shipping the packages outside of the country and those will probably never be traced.

Also, another technique is using a proxy shipping point. Find a house that is vacant. Have the packages shipped to there. A lot of times FedEx or UPS will just set the package by the door if no one is at home.

The resources required to investigate EVERY fraudulent purchase would be astronomic. As a taxpayer, you would freak out if you found out your taxes were going to increase to hire more enforcement officers to find your credit thief. The fraud dept of your credit card company should have resources to help protect you from liability. Catching thieves takes people and time.

But, I DO agree that it would seem like a walk in the park...

What I found out is that unless it is a boat load of money, they don't even try looking for them. Someone got hold of my BOA card and charged all over the country. It was a tidy sum, but not enough for them to bother going after the person. Instead they made me sign a hundred forms swearing it was not me.

actually the situation will be solved and the appropriate action will be taken against the thief. both the cc company and the police will have a handle on it. you're correct in asuming your friend would be offended as it's none of your concern.
