I have Directv -- I switched from cable about 3 years ago.
The advantages of satellite are more stations for a lesser price. In my area -- I also get a discount on Directv through the phone company. I also like the on-demand tv guide feature, so I can easily see what's on. The ability to set an autotune is also really neat -- you can scroll through the guide and choose a program you want to watch in the future, and when that program is starting your TV will automatically tune to it. I like that you can have favorite lists (set up only the channels you typically watch) so you can flip through only the channels that interest you. I absolutely love the caller-id on the tv screen. Disadvantages are we often lose the signal when it's raining, it doesn't even have to be a bad storm. We have to pay an additional fee for each additional receiver/TV that we want satellite on. We get local stations but not local public access channels.
I switched from cable because the rates kept going up. In my situation it's cheaper for me to have Directv on 3 televisions than it was to have cable. If you have a lot of TVs cable would be cheaper.

I've had both....if you live in the snow belt area of the usa, you can loose your signals during snowy days, and satellite companies wont prorate the downtime on your bill like the cable company would do, and anymore, cable can compete with a variety of packages, programming, tivo, DVR.....satellite seem's cheaper, but you'll find out if you loose a signal, just how customer friendly they really are.
go with cable in my opinion.

Satellite is WAY better, more channels and far superior picture quality than cable. Cable is only good for .... hmmm...nothing but higher prices and poor picture quality and not enough channels.

To simplify your connections, first take your satellite tv for pc cable and connect it on your satellite tv for pc container, and out of your satellite tv for pc container on your DVD recorder , the two from yet another cable connection , (out from the container to the in on your recorder. Or RCA or composite jacks (yellow, purple, white wires) out from the container to in on your recorder. Then from the recorder (out) to the in of your television. you ought to use the two cable or RCA jacks for this connection additionally.
