Thomas is a Welsh surname , although that side of my family is pure English, but clearly someone along the line was Welsh generations ago....

Mine is German Originally spelled Wehner but my dad had it changed to Wahner. I would believe that it would have to do with a guide/ pathfinder. think of the h as an upside down y, that's how you would pronounce it. " way ne'er". };~)
