First, how much time occurs between 9 pm and 5:30 am? 9 to 5 is a typical eight hour workday, so just add thirty minutes and you get eight hours and thirty minutes of time (8:30). To divide this 510 minutes into five equal times or shifts, divide 510 by 5 and you get 102. At 102 minutes for each watch, you get: 1st watch: 9pm until 10:42pm 2nd watch: 10:42 pm until 12:24 am 3rd watch: 12:24 am until 2:06 am 4th watch: 2:06 am until 3:48 am 5th watch: 3:48 am until 5:30 am Always remember to carry your minutes over to add an hour when the count gets over 60!
