Actually, even if these countries apply for US membership, the US Congress and Senate, and even its people will deny these countries their membership.
There has been many attempts about this. The Philippines tried more than twice already, one of it was in fact started by the US itself.
The US will protect its interests, and that is its wealth, its culture, and its integrity as a "strong" nation. If the US will accept Iran as a member state, then the US is by law, extending all its benefits to the Iranians. But the US will not be willing to bend its laws for the Iranians. Which the Iranians will not accept.
The US will also be extending the same for China and must bend their laws for the Communists, which the US will never accept, and which China will never accept either.
Also, by extending the rights, then the US is opening itself, example, its Presidency, Senate, and Congress, to the Iranians and the Communist Chinese. Will the US and its other original 50 states accept a Communist Chinese as the US President? Will the original 50 state people of the US accept an Iranian as the US President?
By Law, the same rights must be extended to them as part of the now 52 states of the United States (ie 51st Iran; 52nd China, based on our example).
If they don't, then that will trigger the collapse of the US, politically and as a force to be reckon with.
Additionally, mixing 3 different "strong" and "aggressive" cultures will start the melting of these cultures. Only one of these 3 will survive, or none-at-all. That is another aspect no one will accept.
Autonomous will not work, as per your question, we are talking about being a member as a "state" of the United States.
:)
That's my insight.

Why would a sovereign nation give up it's sovereignty?
If you think that the USA sucks, why on earth are people from France, Germany, Spain and the UK still emigrating? Why are so many people willing to break the law to come to the US?

The only people who believe the USA is so great are the 98% of US citizens, which have never been outside the USA. The other 7 Billion people around the world think, its just one of 220 countries, maybe with a little Napoleon complex.

Makes you wonder!!!!!!
Europeans people would be very unhappy. They are used to living a much or more secure life and have an economy which is superior to providing for its citizens than the USA. Most Asians would not want to give up their expanding development for a country on the decline and deteriorating,
Hitler was looking to rule the world too. he also thought his brand of government was the best.

Those countries are older than the USA and have their own uniqueness. Why would they want to become part of the US?
Also, the USA is not currently taking applications....

Your thinking matches exactly with you adopted name.Have you ever considered that even if others wish to become a state of America,WOULD THEIR REQUEST BE ACCEPTED?Never. How many rich people are willing to adopt thousands of orphans, even when they can afford it?Your Idea of one nation is laudable and let's hope some day this world becomes a 'united entity' if not a single country.
