I was working in the oilfield in 1987. Our company had a job in Cody Wyoming that was at the foot of the runway at the airport in Cody.

We had been there for several weeks and my coworker and I had gotten into a good working pattern. Since there were two of us, we worked a minimum of 12 hours each, sometimes working 14 hours a day.

Our field office was a small trailer that had nothing more than a chair to sit/sleep in, a radio, and a small refrigerator for us to work our equipment.

It was cold in Cody, the oilfield was pretty slow and the locals did not take kindly to us (being from out of state) coming in to work their turf. So, things were really cold working there.

My coworker's wife had just had a baby the previous summer and this was their first child and their first Christmas as parents. As things were going well, we decided that he should spend Christmas with his family (it was not our decision to make) and I would cover for him while he was gone for the 3 days he was traveling and at home.

Because I was the only guy at our location, I could not leave the jobsite until things were really slow. That meant, going into town to get food whenever you could. It was not that bad, as I would go to Wendy's and buy a bunch of hamburgers and throw them into the refrigerator for meals.

The days leading into Christmas had been busy and I had not had time to get into town to refresh the groceries. So, it ended up being Christmas eve after 6 when I could get away.

Unfortunately for me, everything in Cody had shut down. Even the 24 hour Amoco that sold the refrigerated Stewart sandwiches was shut down.

I went to our local hotel, and their restaurant was closed to.

So, it had been a day or so since I had eaten and there was nothing to do but listen to the local FM station that played Christmas tunes (no commercials) from noon on Christmas eve until Christmas Morning.

At 6 am, I hoped the Amoco had opened. It was not.

At 10 am, it was still closed.

At 11, the hotel where we where staying had a Christmas buffet ($25/person). Having not eaten for a day or so, I really chowed down in my greasy, smelly, oil field company coveralls while the locals were there in their finest wear.

What was really funny was, that a couple of days later, we had to move to north of Powell to a new jobsite. I got our gear there and was fine. However, it was on the morning of the 27th, sleep deprived, driving back from Cody that I fell asleep at the wheel and hit a cow on the open road. It totaled the vehicle we had. Standing in the middle of the open range, a buddy of mine that had driven over from Michigan happened to drive by and pick me up and take me to our jobsite.

I told everybody what had happened (there was one guy, a Christian, that had been prompted by the Holy Spirit to pray for me as he sensed I was going to be in danger-I did walk away from the wreck without a scratch, without wearing a seatbelt from a vehicle that did not have airbags).

Anyway, that was the final straw for me and I quit the oilfield shortly thereafter.

The worst Christmas ever would probably be this Christmas since me and my boyfriend just recently moved into our first apartment together so we'll be a little more broke than past years. I don't think it will be a bad Christmas, just not as good as the previous years in regard to having money.

Here is the shortened version of Christmas 2002. (this is true, I couldn't make it up if I tried) My wife and I were at her grandparents for christmas dinner. Her 90 year old grandfather pulls out a bottle of champagne (large 1500ml bottle) pulls off the wire and sets it down. My wife goes to put the glasses down on the table, as it explodes, hitting her directly in the eye (with a plastic cork). After 6 hours in the ER, they send her on her way with a bunch of meds. There was too much internal bleeding, they couldn't see anything past the blood. After 3 months, the blood had disipated to where they could see that her retina was detatching, she needed immediate surgery (it was only partially detated, if it had fully detatched it is a more difficult and not as promising of a surgery). She spent 2 months at home recovering. Thanks for the christmas gift grampa...

it had to be the christmas when i was 10 yrs old. my mom had just married a guy that absolutely hated (and he didn't care for me much either). he had sucked about every dime my mom had out of her so there wasn't much money for gifts. i loved christmas shopping even then but my mom and i weren't allowed to go. i was stuck there with him on christmas day. no family. no christmas dinner. nothing. just him and my mom. my mom was so depressed, she didn't even get out of bed til noon. it was horrible. i think that was the christmas i decided when i got older, there would be no man ever to control my life the way he did hers. thankfully they got divorced 5 months later!

It was 1978, I was stationed in Germany and it was my first Christmas away from home.
We got an emergency call and I had to go on duty. I ended up getting frostbite on two of my toes.

hmmm, probably last christmas...my mom died just a year ago yesterday, and I really missed her during the holidays. The holiday season meant so much to her, and it really meant a lot to me to have her there...it just felt kind of lonely and very weird to celebrate the birth of Christ without her. She always went out of her way to make others feel special all the time, and especially during the holidays...

My step-father passed away suddenly on Dec. 18, 2003. So instead of preparing for a holiday celebration, we prepared for not one, but two memorial services (we live in CA, but his parents wanted to have him laid to rest in Houston, where they live). He loved the holidays so much too... that Christmas was horrible.
