Rivers provide a water source so that people can settle there, as well as making the land fertile for crops. Mesopotamia (Sumer) was between TWO rivers, which made it even more fertile. The Nile river flooded every year, spreading nutrients across a wide, flat plain. This made farming very easy in that area. The Indus valley is a delta: the river splits in two as it meets the sea. That spreads the water and fertility further, providing a larger area for farming.
