While not in the "horror" genre, The Cobra Event by Richard Preston scared the dickens out of me. It's a work of fiction about bioterrorism (more or less) that is terrifying because the scenario he constructs is absolutely plausible. When I was in college, the author came to address my molecular biology class, so we all read the book, which was then his most recent work. I started reading on a Friday afternoon, and I did not stop until Sunday morning. It's that good.

The Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill (Stephen Kings son)
20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill

The Shing by Stephen King

Salem's Lot - because it's Stephen King in the raw days before all the shiny, happy horror.

Beloved, by Toni Morrison - I can't believe how scary this book was. Seriously. Maybe because I read it in the middle of the night, alone in my apartment. Who knows, but it scared the crap out of me. Super creepy.

Anything by John Saul - he's like Stephen King, but with more action. By far one of the scariest authors I have ever read.

Previous answer is right on with 'Salem's Lot' - also try 'The Shining', by Stephen King. The Overlook Hotel visited me in my dreams while I was reading it.

Since you are looking for "Scary" and since you like poetry, I would suggest Edgar Allen Poe.
