two of my relatives were killed in wwII, one i know was killed on iwo jima but the other one no one knows, he is buried at arlington national with two others, possibly crewmembers from the air corps buried together. most of their family members are gone now so i can't ask

If it's anything like British service records, you won't. Men were simply listed as "killed in action", not how they were killed - it would be much too insensitive for the relatives to have a notification detailing the actual wounds received at the moment of death, so no such records were kept.
