Whatever number the exponent is, you multiply the base number by itself that many times - e.g. 4 with an exponent of 3 means 4 times 4 times 4.

How do you write them? I use the ^ mark. Like this:

10^3 = 1000
4^5 = 4*4*4*4*4* = 1024

you take the number and multiply it by it self how ever namy times it says like 4 fifths. take four and multiply it 5 times (4*4*4*4*4)
