The main beneficial effect of lotion is moisturizing. Human skin does fine without it. Some people think moisturized skin looks or feels better than untreated skin. Externally applied lanolin can help skin deal with extraordinary circumstances. Callouses on feet can dry out and harden enough to crack. It can alleviate stretch marks on abdominal skin during pregnancy.

It's a very complex theory that states:
If there is no lotion on the skin, that object gets the hose again. Then the lotion goes back in the basket. Ahem, i said, PUT THE LOTION IN THE BASKET
