Gigabyte's top of the line stuff, i wouldn't regret spending the extra money on it.

Running at stock speeds, from one motherboard to another, given the same Chipset, CPU and Ram. There will probably never be more then a 0.5% difference in performance.

What makes a gaming motherboard "better" is the overclocking: stability and features.

If your going with and AMD CPU look for either a 5xxSLi nVidia or ATi Crossfire chipset in Socket AM2

If your going with Intel look for the newest Intel chipset you can afford preferably the "x3x" series or 6xxSLI nVidia chipset in Socket 775.

On intel systems the memory controller is on the Chipset and not on the CPU so a better (newer) chipset will have a better (faster) memory controller.

Gigabyte is one of the best mobo's on the market. I've been building systems based on Gigabyte boards for years and have yet to encounter any problems.

As for gaming, these days just about any "good" mobo will work, it's the video card that requires a bit of research.
