I have lived in both cities and love them both but given a choice, Sydney wins every time. Restaurants and culture in both cities are as good as each other. Melbourne likes to claim differently but it isn't so. Sydney is far and away the more beautiful city. Education is much the same and prices in Melbourne for housing are rapidly approaching those in Sydney.
The climates are different. Melbourne is more temperate with hot dry summers and cold wet winters; Sydney is sub-tropical with warm wet summers and mild dry winters.
You will enjoy living in either city. Go with the one that offers the better job.

Both cities have so much to offer, Sydney is a beautiful city, the harbor is one of the best in the world and the weather is also pretty good. However Melbourne offer more in the way of culture and ethnic diversity, the restaurants are the best you can choose from any cusine and the live music scene is also the best. Melbourne has good public transport and the people are friendly. Although the weather is not as stable as Sydney, if you don't ike the weather in Melbourne, wait 5 minutes it will change. Cost wise Melbourne is a less expensive place to live. I have lived in both cities and Melbourne would be my choice every time.
If you have a family to consider education is also less expensive than Sydney. Melbourne has been voted the second most livable city, I forget which city was voted in at first place but it wasn't Sydney.

Melbourne!
I have lived in both, and both have their merits. However, I have chosen to live in Melbourne because it's a little more relaxed, less expensive for housing, restaurants - pretty much everything. It's not so spread out, the drivers are (marginally) less manic, there's less traffic, great food scene and live music scene, and you don't need to be a millionaire to live a reasonable lifestyle.
Sydney is undeniably beautiful - the harbour, the northern beaches etc. - but unless you've got loads of $$$, you won't really get to enjoy them. Sydney is probably a better place for a short visit, but for long-term lifestyle benefits you can't beat Melbourne.
