it is about 30ft away from g wireless router WUSB11 is a b modem should i switch to the wusb54g, will it get better signal strength

This is a little tough to answer mainly because of many open questions. The truth is that B range is actually further than G because it is slower and therefore can cover further BUT it also is OLDER technology. It does not support new security like WPA (many barely supported WEP) and it generally has some compatibility issues with newer access points.

If your access point / router is using WPA you probably won't pick up the router (should be able to see it in the available access points) but won't be able to connect to it.

If you don't even see it in the available access points settings, you may have a bad device OR bad drivers for it.

So an upgrade might be in order but without knowing the details of what router, what encryption (if any), that is about as close as I can get to offering help.
