Because first cars are for inexperienced drivers. And as such you really don't want to go out there and destroy an expensive new car. Learn first on a used car and maybe make the second car new.

The benefits of a new car are the ease of mind knowing that you shouldn't have any major repairs and if you do much of it will be covered under warranty. The downfall is that the payments on a new car are going to be higher and your insurance cost will most likely be greater as you will want to insure your car for all incidents like collision and glass.
The benefits of a used car is a low initial cost, but you never know with a used car what type of repairs you will need in the near future and this can end up costing you close to as much as a new car. Your insurance will undoubtably be lower as you won't need collision coverage on an old car. Often times used cars come with more headaches than it is worth, but that also depends on your budget.
You can try getting a gently used car from a dealer, one that is just off lease or only a few years old. These are often still under warranty and will save you a few thousand dollars off their original price. You can also lease a car if you aren't going to put that many miles on it. That will save some money, but you are beholdant to the dealer and you will have mileage restrictions.

I prefer a used car in any case for the following reasons.

1) You save a lot of money in buying a used car with a few miles. The first owner lost sevral thousands of dollars as soon as he paid it and drove his first mile with. You can even do a very good bargain if you are patient enough.

2) You do not have to bother with running-in and first services.

3) I bought only once a brand new car and this didn't provide me with any unusual hapiness of any sort.

New car - Warranty, generally no probs (depends on the brand), no one has thrashed it before you, and there is nothing hidden. HOWEVER - Heartbreaking and financially devastating if you prang it!
Old car- always have old car probs, worn out, thrashed, 'white elephant's', often need repairs which equals plenty of money!
I have done both and the newer the car the less you have to worry- What about ex governement with really low KM's (or miles, whatever language you speak)

used car would probably keep you out of debt and a good running one is no more expensive to maintain than a new one. I've never owned a new car, I'd be terrified of denting it or someone else opening a door into and dinging it. My husband does body work and is a mechanic...
Used cars can be pretty reliable. I have a 1996 camry and I love it. It did get painted. It was totalled. I don't recommend that for you, unless you have your own mechanic who works for free, like I do. I'm skeptical of use minivans, and older cars, like from the 70's. I would buy an import if buying used... toyota, hundyai, honda, you get the idea... I would avoid ford, chevy and pontiac. My preference. I've owned a pontiac, chevy, ford and GMC. duds.

A new car gets you where you want to go without the worries of a breakdown and is more dependable. A used car just sucks!! You worry if the transmission is going to go out in a busy intersection or your alternator might go out on you driving home at night (how would you like to be parked on the side of a lonely road with out hazard lights and no lights at all??). Used cars break down too often and unless you're rich they rob the pocket book!!

Used car: Lower initial cost. Maintenance costs can be the same or lower than a new car. If you are patient, you can save thousands. If you are not patient, then you may buy a used car that needs lots of work.

New car: Much higher initial cost. Higher insurance costs. When the car needs maintenance, the costs will be high.

When you are a beginning driver you are probably going to have some fender benders. So you are probably better off with an older car to practice with.
The hardest things to learn are winter driving and rain driving. Cars handle differently on the ice and on wet roads You need to learn how to do that.

Well i depends on how you drive. If its wreckless then get a used car. If you are careful and you have money buy a new car. It will last you longer and you will never have to go to the repair place. Just fill up and change oil. Thats it. thats how i roll. My first car. 2007 honda Accord.
