I currently live and work in chicago right now, and the job market is pretty tight, so it really wouldn't hurt right now to start to just get a feel of what the city is looking for, or even the suburbs outside of chicago.....there are so many corporations in the city and the surrounding suburbs that you can look at, research and prepare yourself for the move.

I would start looking about three or more months before you plan on moving here. Get the job set up first. That will leave you time to plan the move. Moving to a big city takes some planning as you have to research the different neighborhoods and which one is best for you, research public transportation nd how to get around, research how much to pay for rent, etc., packing up and making the actual move. So give your self time. Unless a prospective employer is looking to fill a position RIGHT AWAY... then you have to move like hell and get something together. But start saving money for the move, first month rent, etc. so that if they want you to start right away, you can be ready to go.

I would say start now ... though it must be in certain areas that the job market is tight, because I know, companies in Chicago wants my husband BAD for Engineering, I swear I had to turn his cell phone off when he was out of town because scouts wouldn't leave him alone, and heck he didn't even move there, LOL

depends on what your line of work is, it is kind of non-productive to start now...what if a company wants you now. What you can do is start researching the market as far as your line of work is concerned and keep track of trends, salaries, companies which are aggressive in regard to offering opportunities etc. Many things to consider when relocating. Cost of living, schools (if you have children), availability of affordable housing. These are all things that take time to research. The specific job itself you may not want to apply for this far out, but many other aspects of the relocation should definately be checked out way in advance!

It wouldn't hurt to start looking now. If something is too good to pass up move sooner if you can.
