"Family Emergency", just like that. It's not a lie,you never stated "Who's" family, you're not obligated to give any details( if the boss asks for details, it's an invasion of your privacy, not to mention a violation of the hospital in-patient privacy protection act(HIPPA), and, best of all, it's legitimate, it can't be proven! There you have it!(Sorry I couldn't answer this question for you sooner, there was , umm, a Family Emergency...)

You were using optrex on your eyes due to eye strain from doing too much computer work before going to sleep and poured the optrex into an empty glass beside your bed. In the morning you were dehydrated and whilst still sleepy you drank the optrex and started vomiting blood and had to be rushed to hospital - obviously at this stage calling in sick was the least of your concerns. Recommend the office provides you with a better laptop/monitor to reduce your eye strain in future :-)

Real reasons why I had to call in sick (or at least late):
-I've been battling digestive issues since last night.
- I was to pick up a friend at the airport and his flight was delayed. I have no way of getting a hold of him and there is nobody else who can pick him up. (It's best if you call from the airport and find a flight for which the arrival time has actually been significantly delayed).
- My friend & neighbor called me while he was on vacation to ask that I bury his dog that died. Obviously he can't because he's in Florida, the dogsitter is elderly, and there's no telling what the other dogs might do if it's left until later.

OK, here is your star. But, I don't think you will like my answer. The only reason you should call in sick to work today is if you are really sick. If you have some other reason you can't make it in, you should tell your supervisor the truth of why you can't come in. People usually understand if something comes up depending on what the situation is, as long as you don't do it too often.

Well, if you were a girl, I would say claiming to have cramps is always a good one. They never make you elaborate!
A good one for guys would be saying you have diarreah.. or hinting around it. "I have food poisoning" "My food is running through me... I've been physically sick all night".
You could claim that a friend of the family died. (you have to be pretty in need of a day off for that one though). I once took a whole week off with that excuse!

I called in dead once. I even took a black piece of paper, and wrote in white that it was my death certificate, and faxed it in. They said they would go ahead and give me the day for creativity.

Call in "well";
Hi guy! Today is gorgeous, I feel wonderful, and I'm not going to screw it up by coming in. See you tomorrow.
If it's said with a smile, you'll probably get away with it.

As the boss, the only really good excuse I want to hear is the old joke: Call in dead.
