I just added blow in insolation in to my attic. It was from Home Deopt and it costs about 7.50 a bag. I have a ~1000 sq ft attic and only 3 inches of blown in prior too. I wanted to add another 7 inches to give me a total of 10. 1 inch of blow-in is 3.7R.

We bought 35 bag of blow-in, and becase we got more than 20 bags, we got the blower machine for free for 24 hours.

The job took me about 4 hours total. It was really quite easy. Just make sure your careful around the suffits (the air holes on the over hang of your house - you don't want to cover those)

You can do this job yourself!

Answer 1 haqs a valid suggestion; though I suggest YOU don't DIY that job.

R value of any is about 4 per inch. Acceptable in the trades; in moderate climates in an attic/crawl space is R 30.

It seems any contractor; given the sq. ft. of the area involved will know, and stop when it reaches a level agreed upon, or code enforced, etc. etc.

you will need the square foodage of your attic then decide what r value you want , the higher the r value the better. the bag will list the the square footage it will cover at that r value, then purchase the number of bags to cover your square footage.
