*Edit* Ah106, can you imagine the traffic jams in Europe during the european winter when the sun does not shine for days on end, or even further north in Scandinavia, where the sun does a guest appearance of only a few days in the winter ? Solar power has its limits.

** Diane, you are right. People do not want to admit that oil is a NON-renewable source or energy.

The technology is already there, but has been suppressed for a long time by the major oil companies representing vast power (control) and money.
Solar and kinetic energy is part of it, but the main untapped source is nuclear energy. Nuclear waste can safely decline in desert soil/sand (we certainly have enough desert in the world (ironically a lot of it in the current oil-rich lands). Electricity generated by nuclear generators can fill all our energy needs, from household through factories to transport (electic cars and making hydrogen cells). And contrary to popular belief, is very "clean".
For interestingsake, read up a little about how the influx of electric cars in the late nineties have mysteriously disappeared off the market. We don't have a clue how much power the big oil companies have!
Now I'll wait and see if the illuminati will erase my answer...;o)

The industrial world would be impacted since there would be no factories, autos etc. Alternative fuels will be developed long before this happens. I think the main thing is for people to be a little more conservative and green in their lifestyles before rationing is put in place. People dont want to think about this so ignore all the warnings but sooner or later conservation and changing our lifestyle will become a priority. It would be better to be on the voluntary forefront rather than have this forced on you. Those who are forward looking will have the easiest time adjusting to what will happen in the future. Those who are smart will get involved in industries and inventions that will address this future need.

Bio-fuel is a technology thats been around for yonks. Just go to your favorite fast-food joint and fill up on their used oil! No nasty exhaust fumes, just a pleasant whiff of chips and some steam. The best thing is, vegetable oil is a renewable source.
You dont need a new fancy car to do this, most cars can be fitted with all the necessary gadgets. There's one guy in SA who does it. (Saw it somewhere in Popular Mechanics; if anyones intrested, holler at me and ill find the details).
Apparently, Fiat has been running off bio-diesel in Brazil for awhile now.

Coal can be converted into liquid fuels, and therefore is a partial substitute for oil
NATURAL GAS, like oil, is a highly versatile and efficient energy source and can be converted into liquid fuels
NUCLEAR power is derived from uranium, which is also a finite resource
Coal, gas and uranium extraction will also reach peaks and then decline.
After this, donkey carts and bicycles

This is a bit of an alarmist opinion. The availability of energy is a function of price. As oil approches $100/BBL the supply of economic developments increase. Canada has more oil than Saudi but it comes at a cost. Some faith in technology is required. The stone age did not end because they ran out of rocks.

Vango got it spot on, there are also many bio-fuel options available to one day completely replace oil.
I know for instance that South American countries, in particular Brazil, has made large moves in recent years to implement and promote the usage of Bio-fuels.
