It depends on what they are and how much value they have.
I have never been very successful selling old junk. If I sell it to a stranger than they come back if it ever has a problem. If I sell it (like a car) to a friend than I am stuck with repairing it for the rest of its usable life. eBay is a hassle also.
I usually try to donate them for a tax break. I get postcards from a lot of charitable places that come by and pickup stuff if you give them a call. There is also a Good WIll drop off place locally that gets anything else.
I have given a lot of stuff to friends and now know who is glad to take stuff as is and who will comeback like a pest if anything goes wrong with it in the future. So that is a good option.
If it is anything of value then before I throw it away I list it on Freecycle.org so someone else might want to take it away. That has worked well with bigger stuff (vacuums, computers, etc). The only thing I was not able to donate like that was a stove. I finally put it out at the curb for trash pickup and some scavenger came by on trash day and stole it so even that went away promptly.

I don't throw a lot out because I use what I have. When I am called on to clear out, I have had yard sales - two in 30 years. I make runs to the donation bin a couple of times a year with clothing that no longer fits. Clothing items that are too worn to be of interest to anyone else go into a rag bin in the garage for reuse.
Electronics gear is usually stored to be recycled into some other gizmo. I recycle plastics and metals when ever possible, but since we moved, that has been more difficult.
I give books to my mother, and toys to the neighbors. Anything else serviceable is donated. I toss stuff in the garbage as a last resort.
My grandmother raised children in the depression, and her motto was "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, then do without." I try to be reserved in the amount of stuff I buy, which cuts down on the amount of stuff I have to get rid of.

It all depends what it is - if I know someone who could really use the item, I give it to them. If the item is really shot, I throw it away. If there's just a lot of something (like outgrown kids clothing), then I donate it to charity. If it's a rather large item that I think I can make money from, I'll try to sell it on ebay.

All of the above, depending on the condition of the items. Somethings just won't sell, no one wants them donated, and your friends don't want them. ie. VCR machines in my neighborhood.
Then if you don't have room to keep them until they have value again, and you can not find someone to salvage parts from them, throw them away. (They were not made to last.)
I applaud your concern about tossing too much garage.

I think that you should sell the things that poor people don't need and donate thing that poor people need. For example, a bed, or clothes should be donated. A TV, record player, ski board, or vintage stuff could be sold. If your friends don't want the things that don't sell or aren't donated, then you can trash it! Hope this helps.

ALWAYS ask you friends first, then donate them to a trusted Thrift store. Garage sales are a big hassle unless you have friends that will help you out, and you put up (AND take down) signs and/or advertise in the local newspaper or website.

I quess I am a pack rat at heart. I wind up keeping things I know I will probably never use, but afraid that as soon as I throw it away I will need it. If I do get rid of something I check with family or friends to see if they want it.

A little of all of them. I just moved so Goodwill got tons and tons of stuff from me, I have a box of things I'll put up on eBay, some stuff I gave to friends and family and some was just garbage, so I threw it out.

There are lots of things I would like to sell, but I can't seem to find the time...so they end up at a friend's, or Goodwill, or trash.
