As long as you are nursing on a regular basis, you will have milk in your breasts. Some women nurse their children until they are 5-6 years old. Once you begin to wean, your supply will go down. I remember that when I stopped breastfeeding and gave my baby his last breastfeeding, it took several weeks after that for my breasts to feel empty. I was surprised at how long it took.

Do you mean how long does it stay during the day? Milk is produced all the time. It's not like you fill up at night and then your breast gets emptied during the day (like a sack). Even when your breasts feel empty your are producing milk.

If you mean, how long in terms of months or years? As other posters mentioned, as long as milk continues to be emptied from the breast regularly (either by nursing, pumping, or hand expressing, etc.) a woman's body will continue to produce milk. Here is a great explanation of the process:

Also, the previous poster who said 1 - 1 1/2 years doesn't know what they are talking about. As you can tell, milk is produced on the principle of supply and demand. Also, in normal situations, no woman *should* stop nursing at 6 months. The medically advised minimum is 1-2 years and as long thereafter as mutually desired by mom and baby.

When a baby is born the mother will have the first milk (colostrum) in her breasts. This turns to the mature white milk about the third or fourth day. If a mother does not breastfeed at all, or express the milk, the milk will gradually dry up. If she feeds her baby or expresses the milk, her body gets the message "Milk is needed, make more milk". So once milk is still being taken out, milk will continue to be made. Milk production only stops when the mother stops breastfeeding. So if she wants to make more milk, she should let the baby suck more often. If she wants to make less, then she should cut down the feeds. And even then, up to a couple of years afterwards, if she squeezes her nipple she will probably see a drop of milk.

I've always heard your body will continue to produce milk as long as you are breastfeeding. There's a video on youtube about a woman who is still breastfeeding her 8 YEAR old daughter, so I guess that's true.

It's a supply and demand process. As long as you are breastfeeding, your supply will continue to be there.
